A Little Bit About Us
The South Shore Professional Firefighter’s Local is currently made up of 60 active members. The South Shore Fire Department administration staff consists of the Fire Chief, two Division Chiefs, three Battalion Chiefs (one for each shift), and an Administrative Assistant. The “Line Firefighters” and the Battalion Chiefs work 24 hours on/48 hours off, on a continuous cycle, averaging 56 hours per week. The Fire Chief, Division Chiefs, and Administrative Assistant all work Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week.
The South Shore Fire Department currently operates out of 4 stations. We provide 911 service to Mt. Pleasant and Sturtevant. The area that we service is approximately 36 square miles. On average we respond to approximately 5600 calls for service per year. The South Shore Fire Department is a consolidated department. In January of 2009 both the Sturtevant Fire Department and the Mt Pleasant Fire Department combined to create what is now the South Shore Fire Department.
The SSFD is also home to a recently established TRT (Technical Response Team), of which 26 department members are trained to the technician level in Rope Rescue, Structural Collapse, Trench Rescue, Confined Space Rescue and Hazardous Materials Response. The addition of multiple department members to the Racine County Dive Team is currently in progress as well.
Members of the South Shore Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2939 are highly trained and exceptionally dedicated individuals who are forever committed to providing the best care, training and response not only to the residents of the communities they serve, but also to the neighboring communities through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (M.A.B.A.S.). A strong belief of shared training and services has been established throughout the years, providing an even higher level of communication and joint response throughout Racine and Kenosha Counties.
